PS5 Gets Price Increase In EU, Australia, New Zealand

The console's disc drive, on the other hand, is getting more affordable.

Sony has announced that it is raising the price of the PS5 in certain markets, though the company doesn’t mention the US tariffs specifically as a reason. Mentioned specifically in its blog post were the UK and Europe, alongside Australia and new Zealand. More specifically though, the company mentions Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), but while no countries in the Middle East nor Africa has been mentioned, the company says they may also be affected.

Most affected by the price hike though is the Digital Edition of the PS5, going up in price for all four markets mentioned. The standard edition of the console with the disc drive is only getting more expensive in Australia and New Zealand. Perhaps understandably, the PS5 Pro prices remain unchanged. On the flip side, prices for the console’s disc drive, on its own anyway, has gone down. These price changes are also noted to be taking effect today.

The PlayStation blog post mentions “a challenging environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates”. On the note of that last one, this would have been the second time since the original PS5 was released that prices were revised due to currency exchange fluctuations. For context, the console saw its first price hike back in August of 2022, going up RM200 across the board in the local market.

At the time of writing, Sony has not mentioned any pricing changes for the Southeast Asia market, including Malaysia. It remains to be seen if we’d see similar changes in PS5 prices when, or indeed if, these start hitting our shores.
