The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is known for updating its patrol cars from time to time. Recently, there was a rumour that the PDRM is adding the Peugeot 408 to its lineup of patrol cars.

Indeed, the rumour was confirmed when it was found that Peugeot Malaysia has loaned two units of the Peugeot 408 to the force for evaluation. Moreover, the units that were loaned are not just any 408s but the Allure Spec models.

Currently, the Honda Civic, especially the 11th-generation FE model and the 425 FC-generation 1.8S vehicles that were acquired back in 2020, dominates their patrol fleet. Prior to that, the force had been using the pre-facelift Civic since 2016. Perhaps it is time to spice up the fleet.

However, the Peugeot must undergo a series of rigorous tests to determine whether it is fit to join the lineup. Although the exact timeline of the loan was not disclosed, tests are usually carried out for three to six months before the models are returned at no cost.

Nevertheless, the chances of the Peugeot 408 passing the test are high, as it offers both power and an elegant appearance. A 1.6-litre PureTech turbocharged inline-4 engine under the hood produces 218 PS at 5,750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. An eight-speed automatic gearbox transfers power to the front wheels, making it a strong candidate for both city patrols and high-speed pursuits.

The 408 is still in its early stages of evaluation, and there is no guarantee that it will become a long-term addition to the PDRM fleet. One thing is certain, though: it has the strength, technology, and style to make a difference. Is this the beginning of a new era of Peugeot-fuelled patrols? Time will tell!
