AirAsia will be implementing new restrictions regarding the carrying and usage of power banks on its flights, effective 1 April 2025. The airline joins other carriers that have previously announced similar measures, such as Batik Air, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines, in adherence to new aviation safety standards.
As per the new guidelines shared by AirAsia on X, passengers are now required to bring their power banks in their carry-on bags, and must keep them on-person at all times – either underneath their seats or in the seat pockets. Storing it in their checked baggage, or in the overhead compartment is prohibited. Passengers are also prohibited from using or charging their power banks throughout the flight.
Travel Advisory: Starting 1 Apr 2025, #AirAsia is enhancing its power bank policy for safer flights.
✔️ Carry-on only (not in checked baggage)
✔️ Max 100Wh / 20,000mAh (100-160Wh needs approval)
❌ No usage or charging onboard
❌ No storage in overhead bins— AirAsia (@airasia) March 26, 2025
Additionally, the power banks that can be brought on flight are dependent on its Wh rating. Passengers are allowed up to five power banks capped at 100Wh each, while devices in the 100Wh-160Wh range are only permitted with prior approval from AirAsia, and are limited to two per passenger. Anything exceeding that is not allowed.

It goes without saying that those who will be travelling by air will have to keep this forthcoming restriction in mind to avoid complications, especially for the Hari Raya holidays. AirAsia adds that safety reminders will be displayed at check-in counters, as well as through boarding in-flight announcements.
