Intel has appointed Lip-Bu Tan as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective March 18, marking a leadership shift for the semiconductor giant following a turbulent period. Tan steps into the role after the interim tenure of Co-CEOs David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus, who led the company after Pat Gelsinger’s sudden retirement late last year.

Tan’s history with Intel includes a previous position on its board of directors, from which he resigned in August last year, reportedly due to disagreements with some of Gelsinger’s strategic decisions. As part of his appointment as CEO, he will also return to Intel’s board.

A seasoned figure in the semiconductor industry, Tan was born in Muar, Johor in 1959 and raised in Singapore. His academic background includes a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Currently, he serves as the executive chairman of Cadence Design Systems and has been active in technology investments through Walden Catalyst.

“Intel has a powerful and differentiated computing platform, a vast customer installed base, and a robust manufacturing footprint that is getting stronger by the day as we rebuild our process technology roadmap,” Tan stated. “I am eager to join the company and build upon the work the entire Intel team has been doing to position our business for the future.”

Meanwhile, Frank D. Yeary, who served as interim executive chair during the CEO search, will return to his role as independent chair of the board once Lip-Bu Tan assumes leadership. He described Tan as a leader with deep industry expertise, strong relationships across the product and foundry sectors, and a history of delivering shareholder value. Yeary also highlighted Tan’s customer-centric approach, innovation-driven mindset, and ability to build high-performance cultures, expressing confidence that his leadership will help Intel accelerate its turnaround and seize future growth opportunities.
