Microsoft will be ending its support for the Windows Remote Desktop app on 27 May 2025. Users who currently access either Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop or Microsoft Dev Box this way will have to transition to the Windows app, which launched in September last year.
For uninitiated, the newer app enables multi-monitor support, dynamic display resolutions, and easy access to Cloud PCs and virtual desktops. Additionally, it can enhance remote work experiences with features such as device recognition, Teams optimisations, and easy account switching.

The company notes that connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked in the app when it expires on 27 May. For all other users, it will continue working but will no longer be supported.

It’s worth mentioning that the existing Remote Desktop app is not to be confused with the Remote Desktop Connection app that has shipped inside Windows for more than 20 years. This app will continue to exist in Windows 11 after 27 May, and the company says it can still be used to connect to machines until the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is supported in the Windows app.
