NextGenAI is a new consortium launched by OpenAI and 15 different universities and research institutions across the United States and the United Kingdom. It uses AI to speed up research breakthroughs and improve education. According to OpenAI, NextGenAI enables progression faster than any single institution, and is built to prepare the next generation to shape the future of AI.
Some of OpenAI’s consortium partners include Harvard University, the California Institute of Technology(Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). OpenAI has committed US$50 million (~RM221.5 million) in research grants, compute funding and API access to support students, educators, and researchers.

The institutions are already integrating AI in several projects. For example, Harvard and Boston Children’s Hospital are using OpenAI tools and NextGenAI funding to improve patient diagnoses. MIT is using OpenAI’S API and compute funding to advance AI research.
Brad Lightcap, the Chief Operating Officer at OpenAI stated the following during the launch of NextGenAI: “The field of AI wouldn’t be where it is today without decades of work in the academic community. Continued collaboration is essential to build AI that benefits everyone. NextGenAI will accelerate research progress and catalyse a new generation of institutions equipped to harness the transformative power of AI.” This initiative comes after OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu launch last year, a version of ChatgGPT specifically for universities.
