Palmsy Is A Pretend Social Media That Generates Likes For Everything You Post

Nothing actual leaves your device.

Social media is a large but strange corner of the internet, especially for those who would rather be lurkers than active participants. But if you want to have a taste of putting yourself out there, without actually doing so, well, there’s now an app for that. It’s called Palmsy, and unfortunately, as the infamous phrase may have indicated, it is an iOS exclusive.

As the app’s description on the Apple App Store reads, Palmsy “lets you make little posts for yourself. Then sends you some push notifications from random pals from your contacts”. But it also says that “nothing ever leaves your device so your privacy is safe”. The linked developer website points to a Mastodon page, which the description of the app being “a silly app that lets you pretend to post then pretend people you know like your posts”, if you needed something more on the nose.

Palmsy FAQ

It’s difficult to imagine if there is a serious purpose behind Palmsy. Developer Pat Nakajima says on Threads that it is not exactly useful, but is instead kind of fun. Within the app itself, the FAQ section says that “it can be fun to see Likes coming in from folks you haven’t thought about in years”. But on a slightly more serious note, it also says that “it can also be useful in maybe deleting some contacts you might not need anymore”.

Since nothing you post on Palmsy actually goes anywhere, you may be able to use the app as a sort of diary. Though using it as a contact list cleanup tool may actually be a good idea, even if it’s not the fastest way to do it.
