Earlier in the year, we saw a report that claimed that Apple may start rolling out under-display Face ID by 2024, and specifically for the iPhone 16 Pro variants. Now, an analyst has published a slightly different projection, with a roadmap that shows that under-display Face ID will only be a thing for Pro model iPhones in 2025.

Ross Young shared on Twitter a roadmap that predicts just that, with the iPhone 17 Pro models getting the under-display Face ID. Assuming Apple keeps the current naming convention, that is. And for the two years that the Pro iPhone models will be getting under-display Face ID, the front-facing camera will be sitting in a punch hole cutout.

Apple to go all LTPO in 2025, even base models to get 120Hz refresh, finally. https://t.co/n0ivg08pde pic.twitter.com/dwjGiHwn8u

In the same roadmap, it also shows that for the front-facing camera to go under the screen, we’ll have to wait until 2027, when the iPhone 19 Pro models get the treatment. This will also be the year when the regular versions will be moving on from the Dynamic Island pill to the under-display Face ID and punch hole front-facing camera. Which is admittedly a strange thing to say considering the base iPhone 15 models that are getting the Dynamic Island, slated to be announced later this year, isn’t even out yet.

To arguably a less significant extent, Young’s roadmap predicts that Apple will give to all iPhones the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panel in 2025. This will mean that the base model iPhone 17 will finally be getting variable refresh rates of up to 120Hz, though this is something the Pro models have been getting since 2021.

Responding to a question in the thread, Young says that the iPad lines probably won’t be following this upgrade roadmap. Specifically, with one user hoping to see an iPad mini with 120Hz refresh rate, Young says that there are no such plans for the iPhone maker’s smaller tablet as of yet.
