Astro today officially added Viu to its streaming app list which has now grown to eight. For starters, the app can now be accessed immediately through Astro Ultra Box.
First made its debut in Malaysia back in 2016, Viu was the brainchild of the Hong Kong-based PCCW Media Group and focuses on content from the Asia region from dramas to animes. Over the years, the service has also produced its own series in multiple countries including Malaysia which is housed under Viu Originals.
To mark the occasion, Ultra Box owners have now been provided with a Viu Premium plan which they can enjoy until 8 June 2023. Through the plan, they are not only able to catch Viu via the Ultra Box but also through the service’s mobile apps when they are outside of their home as well as through web browsers.
In addition to access to premium-tier content, the Viu Premium plan provides ad-free viewing and unlimited download for offline viewing. In addition to Full HD resolution on the Viu mobile app, the Premium plan also supports up to five concurrent devices at a time.
According to Agnes Rozario, the Director of Content at Astro, the Viu app on Ultra Box can output at the maximum resolution of Full HD 1080p which is similar to the default streaming quality setting for Viu’s smart TV app. Agnes also noted that the Viu app for Astro Ulti Box is currently in development and will be made available to customers very soon.
Interestingly, Astro has yet to disclose its offer for Viu after 8 June aside from saying that there will be “an exclusive offer”. Agnes noted that both companies are still working to finalize this although if you need a comparison, the current price of a standalone Viu Premium subscription is RM14.90 per month.
