Ubisoft Is Working On Far Cry 7 And A Separate Far Cry Multiplayer Title

Both were believed to initially be one single game before being split.

The Far Cry series is a long-running one by French publisher Ubisoft, with the sixth entry being released all back in October of 2021. It looks like the publisher is already working on the next entry of the series, which will presumably be called Far Cry 7. It will also reportedly have a separate multiplayer title in the same world.

Insider Gaming cites sources that claim that both Far Cry 7 and the multiplayer entry in the series was initially meant to be one game. Presumably, the latter would have been the multiplayer component of the former, as you’ll find in most games that have multiplayer parts. This was initially known internally as Project Talisker, but early in development the title was split into two. Now, they go by Project Blackbird and Project Maverick respectively, with Ubisoft Montreal having “heavy involvement”.

Details on both are scarce at the moment, but the report notes that the singleplayer Far Cry 7 would presumably share a setting with the multiplayer title, which is set to be in the Alaskan wilderness. Its exact nature has reportedly changed “numerous times in the past year or so”, but currently it is being made as an extraction-based shooter, which brings Escape from Tarkov to mind. It will also feature mechanics like “permadeath, a backpack system, contracts, and more”.

All that being said, it’s safe to say that both Far Cry 7 and the multiplayer title is still a long way away, with a tentative release of fall 2025. And with the recent pattern of delays that Ubisoft is prone to, chances are will will not even make it to this initial release window.

Worse still, should the report be accurate about the two games beginning life as a single Far Cry 7 title, then it stings just a little bit more. It doesn’t help that Ubisoft was in the news recently for its CEO’s email to staff that sounded like he was shifting the blame for the publisher’s poor performance on employees without decision-making powers.
