Even though the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 was already announced to the world a few weeks ago alongside the Galaxy Note20 series, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Watch 3, and Galaxy Tab S7/S7+, the unveiling at the Galaxy Unpacked event was just a teaser.
This is because it is only today that Samsung has fully revealed all the details regarding its new foldable phone by giving the Galaxy Z Fold2 its own virtual launch event.
Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor alongside 12GB RAM and up to 512GB internal storage, the 5G-capable foldable also features a 6.2-inch HD+ (2260 x 816) Super AMOLED display on its front which Samsung called Cover Display and a 7.6-inch QXGA+ (2208 x 1768) Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex 120Hz display as its main screen.
As a comparison, the original Galaxy Fold has a much smaller Cover Display at 4.6-inch alongside a 7.3-inch main screen. Furthermore, Galaxy Fold2’s main display has more screen space since Samsung has chosen to equip it with a single 10MP selfie camera that does not take much of the viewing space away and the same concept has also been applied to Cover Display which has identical 10MP punch-hole camera.
Speaking about camera, the main camera on Galaxy Fold2 is also much different than its predecessor even though Samsung did retain the similar triple camera setup for the new model. Despite it having similar module design as Galaxy Note20 Ultra, the phone is equipped with a different set of cameras including a 12MP ultrawide camera, 12MP dual pixel wide-angle camera, and 12MP PDAF telephoto camera that provides 2x optical zoom as well as 10x digital zoom.
In our previous report, we have mentioned that Samsung has carried over the Flex Mode from Galaxy Z Flip to the new Galaxy Z Fold2 which allows the phone to be positioned at multiple angles. Users can utilise this mode to let the Galaxy Z Fold2 stand on its own while they watch videos or take photos and record videos using either screen.
Through a feature called Dual Preview, users can also activate both screens during photo taking or video recording, so that the subjects of the photo or video are also able to view themselves. Users can also choose to unfold the phone and use the main triple camera module as a selfie camera with the Cover Display as their viewfinder.
The Galaxy Z Fold2 also comes with a slightly larger battery than the original Galaxy Fold although not by much at 4500mAh. Of course, fast charging capability comes as a standard with the device for both wired and wireless charging. In select markets, users can even choose custom colours for the Hideaway Hinge on their Galaxy Z Fold2 but unfortunately, this option is not available in Malaysia.
At the time this article was published, the launch date and pricing for Galaxy Fold2 in Malaysia has not yet been revealed by Samsung. If you need a comparison though, the phone’s price in the United States is USD 1999.99 (~RM 8285) which is quite hefty.
That being said, the phone has already appeared on Samsung Malaysia’s website since last month which means it is only a matter of time before the new foldable made its way to our shores. Hence, we will keep you posted once we hear more information regarding Galaxy Fold2’s arrival in our market.
