realme 5: For When You Want A Phone That Sits Just Slightly Above The Entry-Level Bracket

Smartphones these days come in a wide range of specs and price. And sometimes, it can be tough trying to pick one when you’re looking for phones that just barely crossed over from entry-level into the mid-range. If you’re looking for such a phone, the realme 5 will likely be the one to give you the best bang for your buck.

The realme 5 comes with a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset, a 5000mAh battery, and two options when it comes to RAM and storage configurations – 3GB + 64GB or 4GB + 128GB. It also has a quad-camera setup at the rear, featuring a 12MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP combo. The price of the realme 5 is RM599 or RM799, depending on the RAM and storage configuration of your choice.

One phone that competes with it within this sub-segment is the Samsung Galaxy A30s. It comes with a 6.4-inch HD+ Infinity-V display, an Exynos 7904 chipset, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, and a 4000mAh battery. As for cameras, we’re looking at a 25MP + 8MP + 5MP triple-camera setup at the back.

While these phones don’t have too many things in common, the items in their spec sheet still fall within comparable ranges. So let’s take a look at why you should pick one over the other.

Chipset

Here, we’re pitting the Snapdragon 665 against the Exynos 7904. On paper, there are a number of reasons why the former is superior. One is the clock speed, where the cores of the former come with clock speeds of up to 2.0GHz, while the latter only comes in at 1.8GHz.

Camera

As mentioned, the realme 5 comes with four cameras at the back, while the Samsung Galaxy A30s comes with three. The latter may be superior if you look at the pixel count, but the former comes with more lenses, which means more versatility to cater to the exact type of shot you want. In particular, the realme 5 has a macro lens that makes it a lot easier to take detailed, close-up shots that would otherwise be very difficult.

Battery

This should be pretty self-explanatory, but a larger battery normally means a phone that lasts longer throughout the day. And the realme 5’s 5000mAh battery is 20% larger than the 4000mAh battery of the Samsung Galaxy A30s.

Price

This is almost always the most important factor when deciding to buy a phone, and the realme 5 has the advantage here as well. It’s pricier variant costs RM799, which is more affordable and better equipped than the Samsung Galaxy A30s, which costs RM899.

As announced during the phone’s launch, the realme 5 will be available starting tomorrow, 17 October 2019, exclusively on Lazada.
