Facebook is currently rolling out an update to its Messenger app, allowing users to easily and seamlessly share their current location. Called Live Location, the feature is available on both Android and iOS devices.
Live Location on Facebook Messenger is similar to what Google rolled out to its Maps app just last week. You can share your current location to your friends and family, and even see an estimate of how long it would take to get to the others’ locations by car. Facebook Messenger allows you to share your Live Location with a group of friends in Messenger, or with just one person. Once shared, they will be able to see where you are on a map for the next 60 minutes, and you can stop sharing any time you want.
To share your Live Location, simply tap on the Location icon on your Messenger app, or tap the More icon then select Location. Once you’ve gotten the latest update, you will see a map of your current location and the option to tap a blue bar to share your Live Location for the next 60 minutes. There is a small clock on the lower right corner of the map indicating how much longer you are sharing your Live Location. To stop sharing, simply tap on Stop Sharing.
This is definitely a very useful tool, especially if you are expecting guests to arrive at your party. Instead of messaging or calling them when they are driving, they can just share their location with you, and you will know where they are, along with an estimate of when they will arrive.
Of course, if you are not comfortable with someone tracking your location for an entire hour, you can still share your static location. Just tap the red location pin, find the location on the map, then share “This Location”.
The update should be available right now, but if you don’t see it yet, try restarting Facebook Messenger.
