Xiaomi Mi 5 Receives Price Cut in Malaysia; Now Retails at RM1,399 (Update: Confirmed)

If there’s one thing that Xiaomi is known for, it’s value for money. Turns out, the company’s current flagship smartphone in Malaysia, the Xiaomi Mi 5, has received a price cut. What was already one of the best value for money Android smartphones has just gotten much more compelling now.

We first noticed this price drop on DirectD’s Facebook page, which mentioned that the Mi 5 – original unit, of course – is now going for only RM1,399. On top of that, DirectD is also throwing in a complimentary Xiaomi Mi Band with every purchase of the Mi 5; the company mentioned that this is a limited time promotion.

It’s worth noting that this price drop has not been reflected on Xiaomi Malaysia’s website yet, which means one of two things: either the site has not been updated with the new price yet, or this is merely a promotion on DirectD’s site. Other online retailers are still listing the Mi 5 for RM1,549 as well, but it’s worth noting that the Mi 5 has received several price cuts in India: it’s currently going for only 19,999 Indian rupee (about RM1,260) in the country. Update (19/10/2016): Xiaomi Malaysia has confirmed the Mi 5’s price drop on its Facebook page.

Regardless, this is certainly a compelling price tag for the Mi 5. It’s packed with a 5.15-inch 1080p IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor clocked at 1.8GHz, 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 32GB of fast UFS 2.0 storage, a 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilisation and phase detection autofocus, a 4MP front-facing shooter, as well as a 3,000mAh battery. The Mi 5 also features a premium glass and metal construction along with a fingerprint sensor.

If you’re keen to get the Xiaomi Mi 5 for RM1,399, you can do so on DirectD’s online store. Alternatively, those who are interested can also pay a visit to DirectD’s physical outlets in Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya.
