An article from Chinese tech blog caught our attention earlier this morning, claiming that Chinese users have begun complaining about overheating issues plaguing the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. The problem, it was reported, was so severe that several customers have claimed that the heat burned out the smartphone’s motherboard, rendering the phone completely useless.
Other users have complained about the overheating causing the display and touchscreen to fail, while some report that the problem usually occurs if the device is used while charging.
The suspected culprit is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor that powers the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. The Snapdragon 810 has been making news for overheating problems. Many manufacturers have played down any issues related to the processor, and Qualcomm denies that its highest end processor has any problems.
That being said, many Xiaomi users have taken to social media and the Xiaomi forums to express their concern and disappointment with the incident. Xiaomi’s representatives have contacted us over the matter, and have clarified that our source article contained several factual errors. The screenshots posted in this article were all referring to the same incident, where a user who purchased a new Mi Note Pro at launch day was not able to power up the device. Somehow, that escalated into “severe and general overheating problems” according to the source article – which, regrettably, we did not fact-check.
Here’s Xiaomi’s statement in full:
1. On May 13, we’ve given the user a new Mi Note Pro and he has expressed satisfaction with the replacement.2. The technicians that first encountered the faulty unit have verified that the mainboard was NOT burnt.3. The unit is currently in transit to Xiaomi’s Beijing office where our engineers will investigate why it cannot be turned on.Xiaomi has always been committed to providing excellent customer service and will do our best to solve any issues faced by users.
We were told that Xiaomi will be looking into why the Mi Note Pro was delivered dead on arrival (DOA) to the customer, and as the statement reveals, it is actively looking into the matter. Xiaomi is very confident, however, that with the five thermal conductivity patents applied specifically for the Mi Note Pro, any overheating issues with the Snapdragon 810 will not be present.
