Huawei P8

After teasing it for quite some time, Huawei has officially taken the drape off its brand new smartphone called Huawei P8. Building upon the foundation of previous Huawei P-series smartphones, one of the highlights for the new Huawei P8 is its 6.4mm slim full aluminium body that apparently takes more than 13 hours to craft.

Powered by the company’s own 2.0GHz HiSilicon Kirin 930 64-bit octa-core processor, the P8 also features a 5.2-inch IPS-Neo display with a graphics resolution of 1920 x 1080, pixel density rating of 424ppi, and sensitive enough to actually be used with one’s knuckles. Apart from that, the spill-resistant P8 is also equipped with 3GB of RAM and a 2,680mAh battery.

As visible during the phone’s launch event in London, Huawei has definitely spend quite significant amount of time for P8’s rear camera. Equipped with a 13-megapixels RBGW sensor from Sony (a world’s first apparently), it also features optical image stabilization system, a dedicated “DSLR-level” image signal processor by Altek, and dual-tone LED flash.

Not enough with that, Huawei has also included plenty of features to take advantage of the camera. Among those that were highlighted at the launch event is the dynamic auto scene recognition, light painting modes, video director mode, and instant preview function. The P8 also comes with an 8-megapixels front-facing camera for all those selfie and wefie moments that users need to snap.

At the launch, Huawei also highlighted the advanced network capability of P8 which was clearly derived from the company’s vast experience as a famed equipment manufacturer for the telecommunication industry. With the help of P8’s Signal+ dual-antenna setup, among such features are Wi-Fi+ function that assists users in finding and keep track of Wi-Fi hotspots as well as the Roaming+ function that helps the phone connects to network faster when roaming.

Even the audio capability of Huawei P8 is not being ignored as well. The company has equipped the P8 with a HiSilicon Hi6402 audio DSP and a smart power amplifier to help deliver sound through the phone’s single box audio chamber. The DSP is also responsible for the P8’s noise cancellation capabilities.

Another interesting feature of P8 that Huawei has showcased at its launch is the ability to locate the phone via voice. It is certainly a feature that is useful when one misplaced the phone as he or she just need to call out the phone in the open which will then activate and identify itself with audible alert.

In a rather odd but still interesting move, Huawei has also come out with an optional back cover for P8 that features a 4.3-inch e-ink display panel that can be used to read e-book or to show information such schedule, weather and clock. Although the cover might help users extend P8’s battery life since e-ink consumes less power, it made the phone thicker though.

Comes in single and dual SIM variants, the new Huawei P8 is priced at EUR 499 (about RM 1, 962) for the standard version which carries 16GB worth of internal storage and EUR 599 (about RM 2,354) for the premium version that features 64GB internal storage. At the launch event, Malaysia has been confirmed as one of the first countries to receive the new smartphone but no details regarding local release are available at this moment.
