Hands On: Honor 4C, Potentially the Mid-Range Smartphone to Get

Honor Malaysia has launched the Honor 4C in Malaysia, and it will be going on sale later today at 3.08PM here. During the launch event of the affordable smartphone yesterday, I have managed to spend some time with it. To be perfectly honest: the Honor 4C feels just like a smaller Honor 4X – and that’s a good thing.

In terms of specification, the Honor 4C is almost a carbon copy of the Honor 4X. Both are powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 620 1.2GHz octa-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded with a microSD card up to 32GB, a 13MP rear camera, and a 5MP front-facing shooter. However, there are two notable differences: the Honor 4C has a smaller 5-inch 1280 x 720 display and only a 2,550mAh battery.

In contrast, the Honor 4X has a 5.5-inch 720 display and a generous 3,000mAh battery, but considering the fact that the Honor 4C only needs to juice up a 5-inch display, the smaller battery capacity could yield the same amount of battery life as the 4X. It’s also worth noting that the Honor 4C only retails at RM529, whereas the 4X is going for RM619.

Design-wise, the Honor 4C is very reminiscent of the 4X. It has the same textured back cover, button placement (right down to the colour-coded lock button), and the capacitive buttons. What has changed, however, are the speaker placement – which is now back-firing – and what appears to be a chromed frame, giving the 4C a touch of elegance.

As the Honor 4C is a 5-inch smartphone, operating it with one hand is much easier than its bigger counterpart, the Honor 4X. However, it is still rather hard to reach the back button that is located on the bottom left side of the phone. Having it located on the right side would make it much easier for one-handed usage – although it’s really not an issue for lefties.

Browsing through the user interface of the Honor 4C was a pleasant experience. Everything is fluid and smooth with little to no stutter when switching between app pages. If my experience with the Honor 4X is any indication of the Honor 4C’s performance in real life, I’ll happily recommend this affordable mid-range device to anyone.

Honor definitely did many things right with the Honor 4C, as it is essentially a smaller version of the Honor 4X – in my opinion, of course. The 4C is perfectly suited for consumers who are looking for a compact smartphone, and at a retail price of RM529, it offers plenty value for money. The Honor 4C will be available for purchase later today at 3.08PM here.
