LG has just unveiled another variant of the Watch Urbane. Unlike the previous version which is running on Android Wear, this particular model will have LTE capability, NFC, and a huge 700mAh battery. More interestingly, it won’t be running on Android Wear, but a new proprietary OS from LG.
LG claims that this variant of the Watch Urbane is the first smartwatch with LTE connectivity. It can also make calls without the need of a phone, so it won’t have to be paired to a smartphone in order for it to have any functionality – unlike Android Wear devices.
Other upgrades to the hardware in comparison to the regular Watch Urbane include 1GB of RAM instead of 512MB, a considerably bigger 700mAh battery rather than a 410mAh one, and three side buttons instead of only one. The top button is used to access various settings, while the bottom one acts as a back button. The middle key, on the other hand, is used to switch between watch modes.
If you followed our coverage of CES 2015 closely, you might recall that LG had a smartwatch that is running on webOS which is rumoured to be launching in 2016. The company, however, has went on to say that the Watch Urbane LTE has no relation to the webOS smartwatch in any way, which is rather odd. How will LG juggle between three different operating systems for its wearables?
We should see the LG Watch Urbane LTE make an appearance at MWC 2015 next week. Hopefully, the new proprietary OS will also be demoed at the event.
