Own a Sony Xperia device and wish to unlock the bootloader so you can customise your phone to suit your need? No problem, here’s an official guide video from SonyXperiaDev’s YouTube channel that teaches you how to do just that. Sony is no stranger to being developer-friendly since the Japanese company has even sold unlocked devices directly from their website before, but why sell different devices when you can release a video to teach people to do it themselves?
Of course, unlocking the bootloader of your Android device isn’t a recommended move and could even void your warranty or have some performance issues (it degrades the low-light performance of the camera on the Xperia Z3 Compact), but Sony makes it very clear to viewers in the beginning of the video, so proceed at your own risk. The video also warns users that the custom ROM you install may not work perfectly with your Xperia device.

If you want to unlock the bootloader of your Xperia device, you may very well follow the instructions above, but if you’re in doubt, the Xperia UI you’re using isn’t that bad, is it? Nonetheless, it sure is nice to see Sony so open-minded to something like that. Visit Sony Developer World to find out more.
