The Garmin Vivosmart, a fitness band by the Switzerland-based company renowned for its navigation equipment, has officially been launched on Malaysian shores. It is the second device to join Garmin’s repertoire of fitness bands alongside the Vivofit.

The Vivosmart is equipped with a 1.35-inch touchscreen OLED display. One feature of the fitness band is Time To Move whereby the band will automatically vibrate after it detects that the user has been idle for an hour. This is apparently supposed to help encourage a more active lifestyle.

Another feature on the band is Auto Goal where a daily goal limit is generated on the device itself – be it steps taken or calories burnt – once the device has recognised the user’s schedule. The band is also capable of displaying notifications such as an incoming texts, calls or emails once paired with a smartphone.

In terms of battery life, the band employs a rechargeable lithium battery that is capable of lasting up to 7 days on a full charge. The device is also be capable of controlling the user’s music player and is water resistant up to 50 meters. However, the fitness band does not have GPS capabilities, which is rather ironic considering Garmin’s portfolio of navigation-centric products.

Vivosmart is also compatible with Garmin Connect, a platform where users can store and keep track of their fitness statistics. Users can choose to upload their data to Garmin Connect through the Garmin Connect software on their computers or through the Garmin Connect app on their smartphones.

Those who are interested may visit Mid Valley Megamall to check out the device for themselves as Garmin are currently having a roadshow from now until this Sunday.  Consumers will be able to choose from a variety of colours for the band straps which includes black, grey, blue, purple and pink; these straps will come in small and large sizes to accommodate wrists of different sizes.
