AMD Carrizo APU

While its existence is hardly a secret, AMD has finally decided to officially unveil its next mobile APU at the on-going AMD Future of Compute press event in Singapore today. Codenamed as Carrizo, the new APU will be carrying an equally new x86 CPU core codenamed Excavator.

Said to be built from ground up for power efficiency, the new Excavator core is apparently optimized for low power notebook and convertibles. To complete the new Carrizo APU, the Excavator will be accompanied by the next generation AMD Radeon GPU and AMD Secure Processor.

Together, the Carrizo APU will become the first SoC that complies to the Heterogeneous Systems Architecture 1.0. Additionally, it will also support DirectX 12, OpenCL 2.0 and Windows 10 as well as AMD’s own tech such as Dual Graphics, FreeSync and Mantle.

Alongside Carrizo, AMD will also be releasing a mainstream version of the APU called Carrizo-L. This particular APU will be featuring Puma+ CPU cores together with AMD Radeon R-Series GCN GPU and AMD Secure Processor.

Apart from these information, there are still plenty of official details regarding Carrizo and Carrizo-L that AMD has yet to reveal. Nevertheless, both APUs will be shipped within the first half of 2015 while systems based on either of these APUs are expected to be available for consumers by mid-2015.
