Apple is currently hosting an event in its head quarters in Cupertino and to kick things off, the company has just announced the release date of the Mac OS X Yosemite update. The Mac OS X Yosemite that was announced a few months back at WWDC 2014 is available starting today for free for all Mac devices available out there, it’ll come with free iWork too.

The Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite was first unveiled at the company’s WWDC 2014 event back in June. The latest Mac OS version has been in its beta testing phase for quite some time now and is finally available for download starting today, and of course, it’s free. Apple did not mention any device compatibility, but they did say “all of you”, so I guess, all the Macs out there can be updated to Yosemite? In addition to that, Apple will also throw in its iWork for free.

Yosemite

Mac OS X Yosemite features a design makeover, giving it a similar look and feel as the company’s mobile OS. Gone are the gradients that we are all used to, OS X Yosemite now comes with translucent panels which “adjust” with your wallpaper. On top of that, there is also a “dark mode” which gives the whites with a darker, eye-friendly shade of grey.

The Notification Center has also been changed to provide the same functionality of iOS version, showing “Today View” that is default on mobile. Spotlight has also given a makeover, instead of staying hidden on the top corner, Spotlight now has its own search box right on the top middle. It has an enhanced “Alfred” like functionality, returning search results from the web as well.

Other notable features include Continuity that allows you to work on one device and continue on another, instant hotspot, the ability to send SMS and MMS, and make/receive using the speakerphone of your Mac. Mac OS X Yosemite also has support for iCloud Drive, it allows (for the first time ever) you to Airdrop between iOS devices and Mac, new look for every native app, and more.
