Xiaomi Makes Singapore its International HQ for Global Operations; Mi 3 to Launch in March 7

Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi, who recently set up operations in Singapore, held a press conference in the Lion City earlier this morning, sharing with members of the media its immediate plans for the country. In addition to announcing the release date for the very, very aggressively-priced Redmi smartphone, the company had more details to share.

Xiaomi’s Redmi smartphone, which was announced in Singapore less than a week ago, will go on sale in the country on February 21 starting from noon – a sales strategy that’s similar to its online sales campaigns in China, where its devices are usually sold out within minutes after being available. It is widely expected that it will be the same the Redmi’s sales in Singapore, given its highly aggressive pricing.

In addition, Xiaomi also announced that its sexy flagship, the Mi 3 – powered by either an NVIDIA Tegra 4 or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset – will also be available in Singapore…in two weeks’ time. Update: the international variant of the Xiaomi Mi3 will sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and will retail at a price that many will find close to unbelievable: at SG$419 (about RM1110) off-contract, this is quite possibly the best smartphone deal one can find anywhere – especially for a smartphone Xiaomi touts as “the world’s fastest smartphone”.

More importantly, Xiaomi had one final announcement at its press conference – and one that will likely put Singapore in the global map once again. Singapore is not only the first Xiaomi office opened outside of China, but the company will also make the country as the international headquarters for its global operations. Given the rise of Chinese smartphone brands making their foray in international waters, this move will likely benefit both sides for the long term.
