CES 2014: AMD’s Kaveri A-Series Desktop APUs Finally Heading To The Market On 14 Jan

2014 AMD A-Series APU Kaveri

Almost exactly one year ago, AMD have briefly mentioned about a new APU codenamed “Kaveri” during its CES 2013 press conference. Built using 28nm manufacturing process, Kaveri is designed to succeed the existing Trinity / Richland APU families and is said to be the most advanced APU from AMD to date.

This is due to the features that the company has built into Kaveri such as AMD’s new “Steamroller” CPU core and Graphics Core Next-based GPU as well as the support for AMD TrueAudio technology, Mantle API, and Heterogeneous System Architecture features. Originally, Kaveri was scheduled for release in the second half of 2013 but as you can guess, that somehow didn’t happen.

The new release date for the Kaveri APU series has now been set to 14 January 2014, according to the announcement that AMD has made during its CES 2014 press conference yesterday. For starters, the new AMD Kaveri A-Series APU will be made available in two models for desktop PCs: the AMD A10-7850K and the AMD A10-7700K, both with AMD Radeon R7 graphics processor.

Click on the Read More link below (if available) to see a brief performance comparison between AMD Kaveri, AMD Richland and Intel Haswell.

AMD somehow didn’t mention the actual specs for these Kaveri APUs but a small note at the end of the press deck did revealed that the A10-7850K’s quad-core CPU runs at 3.70 GHz while its octa-core GPU are clocked at 720MHz. As each of its GCN-based GPU core contains 64 stream processors, the Radeon R7 graphics within the A10-7860K subsequently has 512 stream processors in total.

Considering the GPU’s 720 MHz clock speed, it seems like the graphics performance of AMD A10-7850K might not be far off from a Radeon HD 7750 graphics card. That’s in theory, of course.

Well, we should be hearing more about these new AMD Kaveri A-Series desktop APUs as we get nearer to their release day on 14 January. Not to forget, Kaveri APU is also expected to pop up on notebooks within the first half of 2014.
