The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has announced that four new generic top level domains will be rolled out in the coming weeks. These are شبكة, the Arabic word for “web”; 游戏, the Chinese word for “game”; and the Russian words for “online” and “web site”, онлайн and сайт.
Until recently, top level domains were confined to the familiar .com, .net, .biz and the like. Icann has now opened submission lines to request for new domains to be opened. Names like .porn, .ninja, .ferrari and .bbc were suggested, but there has been no response to the requests.
However, it should be noted that whoever submits the request will also end up owning the domain name. Which is why large companies with IPs to protect are the most active in making submissions. Google itself has made over 101 requests.
