Touch-based laptops are no longer a rare sight since the arrival of Windows 8 last year and as more options are becoming available to consumers, so does the price range. Depending on the hardware specifications, touch-based Windows 8 laptops are no longer as costly as before with quite a number of them actually cost under RM 2000 such as this Acer Aspire V5-122P which is priced at RM 1299.
Powered by the Temash-based AMD A4-1250 APU (one of the first products to come with the APU) that contains a 1.0GHz dual-core CPU and Radeon HD 8210M GPU, the Acer Aspire V5-122P is also equipped with an 11.6-inch 1366×768 220nits touch display that supports up to 10 simultaneous touch points. In addition to that, it also comes together with 500GB HDD and 2GB DDR3 RAM.
While its appearance looks rather alright with polished metal-like finishing on its top half and full black finishing for its lower half, this laptop is predominantly made from plastic. The 1.38kg laptops does not feature any optical drive and LAN port although it still comes with one USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports together with Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. Not to forget, there is also a 720p webcam and SD card reader.

Additionally, the laptop is built with proprietary port which is meant for the VGA-out converter cable that is included together with the laptop as well as another port underneath it that seems to us is designed for external battery or docking station although to our knowledge, those options are not available from Acer Malaysia for this particular laptop. Last but not least, the Acer Aspire V5-122P is also built with a 2640mAh 30Whr 3-cell lithium-ion battery which is said to be able to provide power to the laptop for up to 3.5 hours.
While our encounter with this particular unit was rather too brief for us to properly judge its performance, it is hard not to question this laptop’s capabilities since its specifications are rather close to a netbook. Nevertheless, it is also hard to ignore its RM 1299 price tag while at the same time, customers can also opt for another variant of Acer Aspire V5-122P that features the much more powerful AMD A6-1450 quad-core APU and even more DDR3 RAM at 6GB for additional RM 200.
