With mobile photography entering its golden years, Samsung has announced a new pixel technology that will power its next-gen image sensors, promising to better image quality on standard backside-illuminated (BSI) image sensors found in most mobile sensors today.
The ISOCELL pixel technology is able to isolate physical pixels, enabling more photons to be absorbed into each individual pixel. The technology also reduces crosstalk by about 30%, increasing color fidelity and increasing sharpness and richness. The first Samsung ISOCELL sensor, the S5K4H5YB 8MP sensor, utilises a 1.12um ISOCELL pixel and has a 1/4inch optical format.
And perhaps the best part? The ISOCELL pixel technology is already in customer sampling, and is scheduled for mass production in Q4 2013. Expect it to feature prominently in Samsung’s 2014 flagship devices, such as the Galaxy S5.
