While the company didn’t pointed it out directly, looks like AMD is finally ready to unveil their next generation GPU. Scheduled to take place at 3pm EDT on 25 September (Malaysian time: 3am, 26 September) and will be broadcast live over the web, the event’s name – AMD GPU’14 Tech Day – have pretty much described AMD’s intention.
Furthermore, the Technical Director on Frostbite at DICE (the people behind the famed Battlefield series), Johan Andersson has recently tweeted a picture of the actual graphics card to AMD Radeon’s official Tweeter account with a reference to the GPU and its family via their “Hawaii” and “Volcanic Islands” codenames respectively. While that sounds rather exciting, the picture doesn’t actually reveal much as you can see above.
Rumour around the net currently stated that AMD will dropped the use of Radeon HD moniker for their GPU starting with the new Volcanic Islands family which will then be called Radeon R-200 series. It is also rumoured that the flagship card in the family – the Radeon R9-290X – will have the performance that is rated as in between NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan and GTX 690.
At the moment, official details are rather scarce since the company are still keeping tight lipped about their new GPU. However, they did mentioned in an interview with Forbes that the new GPU is smaller than NVIDIA’s GK110 GPU and is built using 28nm manufacturing process.
