Just hours ago, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that they have completed the USB 3.1 Specification which will soon allow SuperSpeed USB to operate at a higher transfer speed. By higher speed, we mean 10 Gbps – double the existing maximum speed for USB 3.0. If you can recall, this new enhancement for USB 3.0 was first announced by the group back in January.
With that, this pretty much means that developers are now able to take advantage of the new specifications and implement the feature in their product. While the 10 Gbps speed can only be achieved through enhanced USB connectors and cables (according to our understanding), they are fully backward compatible with existing USB 3.0 software stacks and device class protocols.
The group also stated that the SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps will still be compatible with existing USB 3.0 5 Gbps hubs and devices as well as USB 2.0. Well, let’s see how fast the industry will be able to utilize the new specification and made it available for consumers.
