Alcatel One Touch Idol X 15

While it was unveiled to the world back in February during Mobile World Congress 2013, the Alcatel One Touch Idol X actual global debut only took place earlier this month. From there, the device will then be released in our country next week on 4 September through online retailer Lazada Malaysia.

Putting it against the previously released Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra, the Idol X is clearly a much more powerful device even though the Idol X is slightly thicker than the 6.49mm thin Idol Ultra although not by much at 6.9mm. This due to the fact that the Idol X is equipped with MediaTek 6589+ processor which features a 1.5GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and PowerVR SGX544  GPU.

In addition to the larger 5-inch 1920×1080 IPS display that is protected by an oil-repelling oleophobic coating and AGC Dragontail Glass, this device also packs 2GB of RAM as well as 16GB of internal storage that is available only in dual-SIM version – the very variant that will be released in Malaysia next week. However, the company have to sacrifice the MicroSD card slot which is present in the single SIM variant in order to include the extra SIM slot.

Running on Android 4.2 out of the box, the Idol X’s interface is rather unique in the sense that it doesn’t come with app tray. Instead, all installed apps are listed directly on home screen which in a way is similar to Huawei’s Emotion UI. That being said, Idol X’s interface are very close to a vanilla Android with just minor graphical changes.

Another interesting trait on Idol X that we found through our initial hands-on experience with the device is that its camera interface is very minimalistic and contains only a handful of options such as HDR, Panorama and flash. Users can’t even change the camera’s resolution which means that they are stuck with Idol X’s full 13.1-megapixels rear camera and 2.0-megapixels front camera resolutions.

Last but not least, the Idol X is also equipped with a 2000mAh battery which is frankly a rather average capacity for current line-up of Android devices. Stay tuned for our full review of the new Alcatel One Touch Idol X coming your way next week but for the meantime, enjoy the rest of our hands-on photos for the device below.
