Sony Mobile Showcases Xperia Z for APAC Region; to hit Malaysian Market Q1 2013

Sony Mobile has today announced its flagship Xperia Z smartphone at its regional launch here in Singapore. Touted as Sony’s answer to the current popular smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy SIII and iPhone 5, the Xperia Z also marks one of the first entries to a new category of smartphones which will set a trend for 2013: five-inch 1080p smartphones.

The Xperia Z was only officially announced last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and it was a pleasant surprise that the regional showcase for the Xperia Z was held so quickly from the global announcement. Sony Mobile has confirmed that the Xperia Z will be available in Malaysia from the first quarter of this year in three colours: black, white and a funky purple. However, there was no word on pricing just yet.

With no word from HTC or Chinese company Oppo on when their five-inch smartphones will hit our shores, it appears the Xperia Z is set to be the first five-inch 1080p smartphone to be available in Malaysia. And, considering that this will be the trend for 2013’s upcoming smartphones, it’s definitely a step in the right direction for Sony, especially when you consider how long it took them to launch the Xperia TX and V on this side of the world.

In addition, the Xperia Z is defintiely built to be the best in its class. Featuring a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM, it is easily one of the most powerful smartphones in the market. It’s full HD screen also makes it a smartphone with one of the highest pixel densities ever made, at 441 pixels per inch (ppi). In addition, the 13MP Exmor RS camera on the Xperia Z is the finest to come out of the Japanese company to date, especially with the rear camera’s ability to capture high dynamic range (HDR) videos – something previously unique on much larger camera sensors. Also, we’re pretty sure many Malaysians will be excited to know that the LTE radio fitted on the Xperia Z is compatible with the LTE bandwidth in Malaysia.
