Chevrolet will be the world’s first car maker to integrate Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, into its car infotainment systems. This comes after its initial announcement back at Apple’s WWDC conference earlier this year that Chevrolet will be one of several car makers to integrate Siri into its electronics systems. The other confirmed companies include German heavyweights BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz as well as Japan’s Toyota and Honda.
Siri can be activated by linking the driver’s iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 into their Chevy’s MyLink system via Bluetooh, which activates the “Eyes Free Mode” that allows drivers to interact with their iPhones just via voice. “Eyes Free Mode” lets drivers use Siri to make or receive calls, read out incoming texts, play songs from iTunes playlists…all by simply pressing a button on the steering wheel. In addition, “Eyes Free Mode” switches off the iPhone’s display, so you can’t instruct Siri to conduct more complex operations such as opening webpages.
Unfortunately, Chevy has announced that only three models will have support for Siri, and they’ll only be available early next year. Also, there is no word for support for iPads on MyLink.
