The MeeGo community was abuzz again after it was reported that Jolla Mobile’s new MeeGo-based UI is now up and running. Jolla broke the news just hours ago via Twitter, after it retweeted a tweet from a member of the community.
The completion of the new UI is great news and in line with the company’s aim of launching one Jolla device by the end of the year. And what’s more important with the UI completion is that Jolla now have something tangible to be used to convince old MeeGo partners scattered worldwide.
This, in addition to the app store already in place, should be powerful assets to help convince media houses, operators and application developers scattered across the US, Europe, South America and China.
In addition, they are also on an aggresive recruitment drive with an aim of recruiting 100 Finnish staff by the end of the year. Most of the new recruits are expected to be community developers and engineers from the Mer Project, a community project developed after Nokia killed off MeeGo (Mer stands for MeeGo Reborn).
While refusing to comment on the new UI, Jolla CEO Jussi Hurmola said that it “will be a change from anything existing at the moment.” He added, “At the time when iOS and Android came, they made a difference and they have been updating and developing their UIs a bit, but we can take a major step forward.”
