Symantec Presents The New Backup Exec 2010
by Chapree
Tuesday, 09 February 2010 11:30 PM

As the amount of data storage rises significantly over the years, many enterprises have found themselves struggling to manage and protect those precious data. Since the complexity of storage also grows in tandem with its size, so does the cost to maintain them especially in terms of time and money.

This is where Symantec Backup Exec 2010 comes into the pictures. According to Symantec (http://www.symantec.com), the company’s latest backup and recovery solution is able to help organizations - especially mid-sized businesses – to save more time and money in their continues struggle to manage their ever growing storage.

How do the software achieve such savings? Find out more after the jump.

Turn Your Shredded Papers into Toilet Rolls
by Huei
Tuesday, 09 February 2010 11:35 AM

Have you ever been so worried that people would take the confidential document you put through the shredder and put the pieces back together to steal the information? If you have a White Goat, a revolutionary recycle machine, then you’ll have nothing to worry about because the White Goat can turn shredded papers into loo rolls. That’s right, made by Japanese, all the White Goat need is a stash of shredded papers, some water, and after 30 minutes or so, you’ll get a freshly made roll of toilet paper. While the paper looks far from being soft and delicate, it could come in handy if you need to wipe something off the table. The only concern now is, just exactly how much energy is needed for the process of mixing the paper in water and taking 30 minutes to churn out a dry roll of toilet roll, if you’re curious and interested, all you need now is to go to Japan and fork out USD $100,000 (RM350,000) to buy it because who would want to import something weighing 600kg?

The price and size of the White Goat may seem ridiculously high, but I think this is a great start for a greener tomorrow, plus, doesn't it just look cool? Watch the video after the jump.

The Internet: Nominated for Nobel Prize 2010
by Chapree
Monday, 08 February 2010 08:12 PM

Believe it or not, the Internet has been reported to be in the running as one of this year’s Nobel Prize probable laureate. It got nominated in the Peace category nonetheless – a pretty confusing fact for many of us who has known and very used to the Net’s unpredictability.

The campaign for the nomination was started by Wired Italy last year (http://www.internetforpeace.it) and has gathered numerous supports from many corporate organizations such Microsoft, Google, MTV, Sony Ericsson and Citroen,  just to name a few. Even an actual Nobel Prize winner – Shirin Ebadi who won it in 2003 has also penned her support to the campaign.

However, there is no actual way to confirms Internet’s nomination as the Nobel Prize nomination list was never announced in public and are kept secret for 50 years. That being said, judging from this report by AP/Forbes, we can say that the claim seems to be quite legitimate. If Internet eventually wins the prize, we wonder where the money will go to…hmm.

Time dotCom is Now Offering Up To 50Mbps Internet Speed
by Huei
Monday, 08 February 2010 05:38 PM

-- Afzal Abdul Rahim, Chief Executive Officer, TIME dotCom Berhad

Suddenly I’m overwhelmed with an impulsive urge to pack my bags and move to Mont Kiara, because those lucky folks can now enjoy an Internet speed of up to 50Mbps. Time dotcom (TdC) recently introduced the fastest Internet speed available to consumer today, the Time Fibre Broadband that offers speed of up to a whooping 50Mbps. Unlike wireless technology or copper centric or hybrid networks, fibre optics technology can offer a more stable and secure Internet connection and is able to carry more than 1000 times more information than the same sized copper cable.

“We are focused on delivering the first and only pure fibre optic broadband network while others work on packaging services around existing or hybrid infrastructure. Simply put, TIME Fibre Broadband is the answer to the long awaited needs of Malaysian Internet users, providing the highest speed and bandwidth capacity available in Malaysia.” -- Afzal Abdul Rahim, Chief Executive Officer, TIME dotCom Berhad.

With this introduction, let’s hope that we can actually enjoy technology the way it’s meant to be, like watching Full HD videos, streaming high quality or HD videos on YouTube and quick download of all the music that comes with your phone and other music gadgets. This service is currently available in Mont Kiara, with coverage expanding progressively over the next few months in the Klang Valley area. There will also be a value-added service that allows users to Boost the internet speed up to 50Mbps on demand. Time Fibre Broadband is ovvered at competitive rates ranging from RM149 to RM329 for 2Mbps to 10Mpbs.

Why Wear Face Masks When You Have a High-Tech Garment?
by Huei
Monday, 08 February 2010 03:31 PM

I know people who are overly concern about their personal hygiene, even a single speck of dust can turn their skin horribly red (then again why wouldn’t the skin be red with excessive scratching?), and when I see such things happening, I’ll wish to throw them the Detectiar vest. The vest, designed by industrial design students at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, is equipped with sensors that can alert the user about environmental toxins they’re breathing in. The LEDs shows the individual’s quality of breathing based on the toxicity levels in the air, while small vibrators will alert the user if he has entered a “dangerous zone”. The turtleneck collar is made up of protective mechanism similar to a medical/dust mask, and can be pulled over to cover their nose and mouth when they’re in an unhealthy atmosphere. Here’s to taking obsessive-compulsive disorder to a whole new level!

No Multitasking on the Windows Phone 7???
by Huei
Monday, 08 February 2010 11:52 AM

It seems like while everybody’s trying to improve their products, Microsoft is however, limiting the upcoming Windows Phone 7 by removing Flash support as well as the ability to multitask. It has been leaked that the new Windows Phone 7 will have a revamped interface very similar to the Zune HD, along with a new startscreen that cannot be customized by hardware makers. Instead of using multitasking, the Windows Phone 7 will pause apps and use an iPhone-like push notification system for updates. A rather interesting update is that the Windows Phone 7 will have a significant amount of Xbox Live compatibility, allowing developers to use the same code for Xbox 360 games. There will also be a full support for social networking, full Zune integration, and a try before you buy system in the Marketplace.

I know that everybody’s trying to beat the iPhone, or at least be like it, but following its flaws, particularly its inability to multitask, is certainly the wrong direction to go. Sure, there are many things to look forward to like the Xbox 360 support, but what’s the point when you can’t run other applications while playing games? On the plus side, this is only leaked information, so let’s hope that Microsoft will change their mind about multitasking when the OS is ready.

Guy Turns Laptop into a Giant Phone
by Huei
Friday, 05 February 2010 06:37 PM

If you’re still drooling over the iPad and can’t wait to get your hands on one, and you happen to have super skills that can take apart a laptop and assemble it back together in a different form AND still have it working, then you could be as cool as the Chinese hacker here who successfully turned his laptop into a giant touchscreen phone! It does seem rather fake though, the video did not show what OS was loaded into the laptop before it was taken apart, and we have no idea whether is it even a touch sensitive device to begin with? Nonetheless, it’s awesome! Unless you fit the criteria mentioned above, I would suggest that you don’t try to do what the guy in the video did, especially if it’s working fine and contains all your important data.

by Wern Shen
Friday, 05 February 2010 02:50 PM

Different folks have different needs, but when it comes to the iPhone, the most common need is more battery life. If you’re one such person, and are willing to sacrifice aesthetics, then Kingmax might have the solution for you.

Called the Kingmax iPhone Power Case, this curious looking iPhone accessory serves a dual purpose – besides being a hardcase for your iPhone, the Power Case also provides a much needed battery boost of 1500mAh. This part isn’t stated in the press release, but we figure that by using the Power Case, you can also significantly reduce the risk of having your iPhone stolen since the design of the casing itself is somewhat of an acquired taste.

But who are we to judge, right? No word on the official pricing for this case, but if it does indeed tickle your fancy, hop on to the official Kingmax website at http://tinyurl.com/yg7pu6k to find out more.
