Consumers looking to take their photography a step further and begin shooting with an SLR will find the transition easier than ever with Canon's new Rebel XS digital SLR camera. by Vijandren Ramadass
Friday, 04 July 2008 05:11 PM

OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory and computer components, today unveiled the OCZ Core Series SATA II 2.5” Solid State Drives (SSDs). OCZ has gained momentum in this pioneering technology, which uses NAND flash instead of rotating platters as the storage medium, and is a high-performance, highly reliable and energy-efficient alternative to conventional hard disc drives.

The OCZ Core Series delivers the performance and reliability of the latest SSDs at a 50% less price per gigabyte than other high speed offerings currently on the market. For the first time, OCZ is putting SSD technology within reach of the average consumer, and delivering on the promise of SSDs as an alternative to traditional hard drives in consumer targeted mobile applications.

“SSDs offer higher performance, reliability, and energy efficiency than conventional HDDs but the cost variance has limited adoption of vastly superior SSD technology, until now,” said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology. “It is our mission to deliver the highest performance products to consumers at reasonable prices, and with the release of the Core Series SSDs we have done exactly that.”

AMD announced today its highest performance quad core processor to date. The new CPU is called the AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition. Along with the new Black Edition processor AMD also unveiled the Phenom X4 9350e and Phenom X4 9150e processors.

The high-end Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition is a quad-core processor with an unlocked multiplier running stock at 2.6GHz. The 9950 Black Edition carries a retail price of $235 (~RM750) and consumes no more than 140 watts.

AMD says that these three processors are perfect for systems that delivering the performance of four computing cores to small systems where power demands and heat buildup could be an issue. It remains to be seen how the Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition stacks up against high-end parts from Intel performance wise, however, price for the parts is certainly competitive.

All three of the processors have L1 cache size of 64K per core, L2 cache size is 512KB per core and L3 cache is 2MB shared. The processors AM2+ compatible like the other Phenom parts and all three new processors are built on 65nm process.

A 33rd minute strike by Fernando Torres was enough to hold off Germany and hand Spain a 1-0 win over Germany in the UEFA European Championships 2008 early this morning.

Spain have not won a major championship in 44 years, but were the toast of the tournament as the most exciting team to watch having won all their games leading to the final.

Think twice before you scam online
by Vijandren Ramadass
Saturday, 28 June 2008 12:17 PM

I'm sure many of you remember the now infamous Shahrilwan Mohd Sidek case on our forums a couple of years back. The last we heard of him, he was arrested by the police somewhere up north, and is currently out on bail. He probably ruined his future for RM70k, what with his name being all over Google for all the wrong reasons.

It seems that a similar copycat scammer tried to do the same in the immensely populated VR-Zone forums down south in Singapore. The MO (method of operation) was distinctly the same. Do a couple of small transactions to gain the trust of the members, then open up a seemingly innocent bulk order for an insanely cheap price, collect a killing in deposit cash, and dissapear. He even had an accomplice of sorts - just like the Shahrilwan Bonnie and Clyde routine!

Singaporean police however are super efficient, and picked him up a few days after the victims decided to launch a police report. Singapore's laws allow for him to be put in prison for up to 10 years, and also get three strokes of the "rotan" for overstaying his visa (he was a British citizen by the way).

Thinking of scamming on our forums? Think again.

Malaysian Government Orders Immediate Torrent Site Blackout?
by Vijandren Ramadass
Friday, 27 June 2008 11:29 PM

Update : Owls who stayed up late last night informed us that this suspension only involved a single Web Hosting company, and trackers hosted on its servers. The last i checked, there isn't a  definitive provision on the Malaysian Copyright Act with regards to hosting of bittorent trackers. The Malaysia Copyright Act 1987 was last ammended in 1997, and came into force in April 1999.

[ Exclusive via TorrentFreak ]

Reports are coming in that the government in Malaysia has ordered the immediate suspension of many BitTorrent trackers hosted in the country. In a shock move, the government - citing the ‘Copyright Act 1987′ - has ordered hosts to suspend servers hosting BitTorrent sites, pending an investigation. Many sites are offline.

When BitTorrent sites get into legal trouble or other pressures force a move to a new location, the speculation begins on the safest place to go.

For instance, would a site bail out of the Netherlands and move to Canada? Is Canada too dangerous now, and would a move to Sweden be more appropriate? What about moving to Ukraine-based hosting like Demonoid or further afield - China or Russia maybe? Inevitably, discussions usually involve ideas of moving sites east, to countries like Malaysia. Fairly high-tech countries like this seem an attractive proposition, particularly given their government’s track-record in failing to do much about piracy.

Given this background, BitTorrent tracker admins with their sites hosted in Malaysia were confronted by a very unpleasant surprise today. An administrator from a well known tracker contacted TorrentFreak this morning with worrying news, he told us: “Malaysia’s government suddenly forced all torrent websites to shut down today until further notice, a complete surprise to torrent admins and the offshore hosting companies in Malaysia.”

The news was given to this and other site admins, via an email from the hosting provider, which indicates the action has been ordered down from a high level. The email informs the admins that their servers have been suspended by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, under the Copyright Act 1987. As the request came from the government, the host makes it clear they had no choice but to shut down the site. Among the affected sites are Extremebits, Rapthe, Superfundo and several others. According to sources, although torrent sites have been taken offline, other sites dealing in pirate material have also been suspended after the government decided to act on mounting copyright-related complaints.

Prominent Malaysian host Shinjiru confirmed the closures, telling TorrentFreak: “We can confirm that this is accurate. We had enforcement officers from MDTCA visiting the office to confirm the closure of BitTorrent sites hosted on our network. We will comply to all shut down instructions from the local authorities or agencies with warrants or documents.”

RM8k a month for broadband, who wants 3G now?
by Vijandren Ramadass
Friday, 27 June 2008 05:25 PM

Update 7th July :
We received the following clarification to the story below. It isn't an official statement from Celcom, but we're publishing it either way. Thanks to reader Kenny who sent this is.

To update everyone on this matter and other related matters. Firstly we found the root cause of the problem. It was a batch processing which was done and a few (less than 3) accounts were impacted. The Pay Per Use (PPU) charging component was added between 26th till the 29th. As such these customer was charged PPU during that period thats why the bill showed RM8k plus. Anyhow we have fixed the issue and also credited back the whole amount to the customer. We also called the customer and aplogised to the person.

Our PPU is only RM250 Maximum per month. So if a customer still wants to use PPU he will not get any shocking bills but maximum RM250 for as much he wants to use.

As for the network quality we have just completed our core network upgrade by 20 times from the time we first introduced broadband last year. The service should see significant improvement now. However please take note that for certain sites if there is a huge volume of usage there could be potential congestion at that specific area. This is where we need to upgrade the access portion. We are proactively monitoring these areas and also through customer feedback we take action. Sometimes there are new building erected which also can cause a customer to have poor service from before. By getting details this would help us identify the issue and fix it sooner. We are also in the midst of automating our Fair Usage Policy which will help 97% of our users to have good speeds and experience. currently about 3% of the users are utilizing almost 90% of the allocated capacity. During peak periods when these small minority of customers exceed thier 5GB allocation per month thier speeds will be throttled to sites where there is heavy downloading (peer to peer apps)and allow just simple browsing. However during non peak times these customers can carry on doing thier heavy downloading/peer to peer apps. We have also longer term plans on how to effctively improve the service offering.

-----------------

Take this with a pinch of salt. We're still not sure how this happened as details are sketchy, but what we can conclude for certain is lionheart23's friend isn't very impressed.

We've removed the name and phone number to protect the aggrieved, but if someone from Celcom is reading this and would like to shed some light on how an Unlimited Data Only line gets charged a staggering RM8k a month, the customers account number is 97474218!
