Sony recalls 440,000 potential home infernos
by Wern Shen
Friday, 05 September 2008 12:51 PM

Not too long ago, about 9.6 million Sony laptop batteries were recalled from around the world after a couple of them (OK, maybe more than just a couple) decided to go haywire and send the laptops that they were attached to exploding into flames.

But if you thought that was the end of all your Sony related fire problems, then you're wrong. Just hours ago, news of another Sony recall hit the web - this time with the Sony Vaio TZ being the catalyst. Apparently, this recall announcment comes after seven people (five in Japan, one in USA, one in Italy) have being burnt by fires caused by faulty wirining in their Vaio TZ's. Sony Malaysia's website doesn't have any further information regarding the recalls, so until then, it's advisable to keep a fire extinguisher handy.

This small, easy-to-carry device stands ready to connect teens, tweens, travelers and “Tweeters” to their online world be it surfing the Web, chatting with friends, blogging, streaming content, uploading photos or enjoying favorite online videos, music and games. A bright 8.9 inch glossy LED display (1024x600) presents most web pages with no left-right scrolling, and the keypads are large and easy to navigate. Google inches one step closer to world domination
by Wern Shen
Thursday, 04 September 2008 11:17 AM

Since it’s launch, Google Chrome has been the hottest thing since sliced bread in the computing world. It’s fast, it’s light weight and it’s free. What else could one ask for in a browser, right? Well, for the average Joe, nothing much.

Unfortunately, average Internet users we are not, and after a couple of hours of what we would classify as “normal usage“, we stumbled across a couple of interesting issues. We’ll be sharing some of our thoughts about this new browser after the jump.

Nikon D90 DSL(VC)R goes official
by Wern Shen
Wednesday, 03 September 2008 04:24 PM

In a ballsy move that will either have you going yay or nay, camera boys Nikon have announced that video functionality will make its way into their latest DSLR, the D90. Recording video in M-JPEG format, what’s probably the niftiest part about this new functionality is that like a regular DSLR, you’ll be able to utilize various lenses (such as macro, wide angle and fisheye lenses) while shooting these videos.

More information on the D90 are available here and here, but there’s still no word how much this bad boy will set us back in Malaysian Ringgit.

by Vijandren Ramadass
Saturday, 30 August 2008 03:32 AM

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd today lifted the lid on the most innovative addition to its ever expanding notebook range – the ultra-lightweight Samsung X360. Capable of meeting the extreme performance and connectivity needs of the new aristocrats of the mobile world, the X360 sets a completely new standard in mobile computing – offering a comprehensive set of features unlike anything of its kind on the market.

Even though it is the lightest notebook in its 13.3 inch class, weighing a miniscule 1.27 kg, the Samsung X360 incorporates all of the extensive functionality demanded by ultra mobile and results-driven professionals. Unlike the claims of some other "light" notebooks, the X360 is fully featured without compromise, including 3 USB ports, a built-in HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) connection, a 34mm express card slot and VGA output. For fast and easy transfer of documents, images, video or music it incorporates a highly flexible 7 in 1 memory card reader, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR* (Enhanced Data Rate) and super-fast 802.11n wireless technology. It also boasts an integrated digital motion camera, so it's easy to stay in touch with colleagues or friends using video-conferencing or live messaging.

But there is more, for business and home office users the X360 incorporates a 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN connection and support for Samsung P-Dock, docking station – which simplifies cabling and provides a 'single click' connection and easy access to a wide variety of ports."

Mobile number portability is here - almost
by Vijandren Ramadass
Thursday, 28 August 2008 01:08 PM

After years of waiting, Mobile Number Portability will finally be implemented tomorrow (Friday). The initial service will be offered to Prepaid subscribers, while those on Postpaid lines will be able to join in the fun in a couple of weeks.

To those not so in tune with the technical jargon, Mobile Number Portability or MNP in short is a service that will allow you to switch telco providers without having to go through the hassle of changing your service number. After tomorrow, no longer will the prefixes of 016 solely be that of a DiGi subscriber, or 012 be an exclusive Maxis number.

With MNP finally in place, subscribers will have the convenient freedom of switching to competing telco providers while retaining their respective phone numbers. There will be a RM25 charge everytime the MNP is used to switch to a new telco.

The nationwide launch for the MNP service is in October, but prepaid users may start switching from tomorrow onwards. We have been informed prior to the nationwide launch, each telco is only allowed to process 100 MNP applications a day. Prepaid credit will not be transferred over to your new service provider, so finish up before you jump ship.

Confidentiality assured with Kingston's FIPS certified BlackBox
by Vijandren Ramadass
Wednesday, 27 August 2008 02:11 AM

Kingston Technology Company Inc. today announced the release of its first Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)*-validated USB Flash drive, the DataTraveler BlackBox, available in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities. Gaining FIPS 140-2 certification requires a validation process that meets federal requirements set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)**, and the Communications Security Establishment of the Government of Canada. This is critical because many governmental agencies in the United States and Canada mandate that sensitive "data at rest" (i.e., all information not in the network) must be encrypted with the FIPS 140-2 standard.

"We are very excited that our DataTraveler BlackBox met all federal requirements established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)," said Nathan Su, Flash Memory Product Manager, APAC Region, Kingston.

"This certification, along with other enhanced security features, makes the DT BlackBox an ideal way to store and transport confidential documents with the utmost confidence that the data is secure."

The FIPS Level 2 standard requires the DT BlackBox to run a power-on self test which verifies that the encryption architecture is functioning each time it is plugged into a USB port. Beyond the NIST certification, the DataTraveler BlackBox features 256-bit hardware-based AES encryption via a dedicated processor which automatically encrypts and decrypts data on the fly. The drive automatically locks down after ten consecutive failed password attempts, thus helping to prevent unauthorized access if the drive is lost, stolen or misplaced.

Avril Lavigne stands tall
by Vijandren Ramadass
Saturday, 23 August 2008 12:44 AM

The good news of the week is that common sense has prevailed, and the Avril Lavigne concert will go on as scheduled on the 29th of August - as an actual concert with jumping and screaming we hope! So says Avril Lavigne and so say the organizers. The Ministry that a few days ago ordered the concert to be postponed has yet to issue an official statement.

We'll reserve counting our chickens to when they hatch.

Malaysian authorities have reversed their decision to cancel a concert by Canadian pop-rock star Avril Lavigne, saying Saturday that she can perform next week despite complaints her act is "too sexy."

The ministry's secretary-general, Muzahet Masruri, said Saturday that authorities decided after talks with the concert organizers that Lavigne "can do the show" next week, even though the government would still have preferred a different date.
