Over the past year we’ve heard a little bit about the screenless AI device that OpenAI is working on with Jony Ive. Though that description was just about all we knew about it, until recently anyway. A leakster claims to have the supply chain info of said device, describing it as possibly being a pen.
This comes via Smart Pikachu on X, who claims that the device could come in one of two possible forms. One is, as mentioned a pen. The other is a “‘to-go’ audio device”. Or, if we were to combine the two and assume than the pen is a typo, it could be the kind of device you pin onto yourself. This would make it sort of like the failed Humane AI Pin, or the Rabbit R1 minus the screen.
Whichever form it ultimately takes, the device is claimed to also be known internally as Gumdrop. Originally, it was meant to be made by Chinese manufacturer Luxshare. A dispute over its manufacturing location landed the project in the hands of Foxconn instead. Part of this is because OpenAI doesn’t want the thing to be made in China. At current, the claim is that it will be made in Vietnam, though it could potentially be shifted to a Foxconn site in the US.
It remains to be seen though if this pen-shaped AI device can do what smartphones already can, but better. Others, like the aforementioned Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 have tried and failed, in various degrees. A previous report pinned its release in sometime in 2026, so it shouldn’t be that long a wait to find out.
