Genting Malaysia Berhad has announced that it will introduce charges for vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands. The company says the charging system, to be rolled out at a later date, is necessary to support the long-term upkeep and safety of the 24km stretch.

According to a statement issued by Resorts World Genting, the road has been fully funded and maintained by Genting Malaysia since the 1960s. Built on steep and challenging terrain, Jalan Genting Highlands serves not only visitors to Resorts World Genting but also various other mountainside destinations that have emerged over the years. The company says decades of heavy usage have resulted in significant wear and tear, requiring continuous maintenance to keep the route safe for the millions of users who travel it annually.

Genting Malaysia noted that slope reinforcement, road repairs, and emergency readiness all contribute to escalating costs. Teams also are stationed at both mid-hill and hilltop areas around the clock as part of its emergency response infrastructure. The company added that maintaining the road and slopes is “challenging, hazardous and expensive”, but essential to ensuring year-round access.

The upcoming fee will be implemented under a “user pays” principle to help defray the costs of upkeep, repairs and unforeseen incidents. Genting Malaysia emphasised that the initiative involves a private charge on a private road located entirely on private land, and is intended to ensure long-term sustainability while maintaining high safety standards for all users.

As of now, the company has yet to confirm when it intends to introduce the charge for road users. Genting Malaysia says more details on the charging mechanism will be announced once the implementation plan is finalised.
