Sony Japan announced that it will be launching a cheaper PS5 during its State of Play Japan broadcast. The catch? It’s a Japanese-language-only console that is exclusively available in, you guessed it, Japan.
Sony launched the console in celebration of the PS5’s 5th anniversary. All in all, it is simply a refresh of the 825GB PS5 Digital Edition, which retails for JP¥55,000 (~RM1,468). For reference, if you were to purchase the same console through the official Sony Malaysia website, it would retail for RM2,069 without discounts.

The console will launch in Japan on 21 November 2025. Naturally, Sony is unlikely to release the console in other markets, as the company designed it primarily for the Japanese market. If we were to speculate, however, we believe that this is more a strategic move that aims to strengthen the console’s user base in its home market.
However, it’s worth noting that Sony also announced other new hardware during its broadcast, not just the cheaper console. The company also confirmed a brand new 27-inch gaming monitor with a distinct charging hook meant for the PS5 controller.
