Disney’s streaming service launched in the local market as Disney+ Hotstar back in 2021. While a bit overdue, the House of Mouse is streamlining its streaming service, leading to a name change. This applies to Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia. This will see the service be known simply as Disney+, like in the international markets, starting 9 October.
The announcement, oddly, is made pretty quietly, but you can find it at the very bottom of the company’s official Malaysian site. In it, the company cites Vineet Puri, Vice President and General Manager of The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia, as saying “with Hulu as our new general entertainment brand on Disney+, we will continue to deliver unparalleled storytelling to families, friends and fans”.

On that note, Amanz reports that, as part of the change, the Star hub will also be renamed the Hulu hub. Beyond the name changes though, it looks like most of everything else will remain familiar. The infrastructure will still be that of Hotstar, meaning it remains only accessible in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.
The report also notes that there will not be any changes to the subscription price of the service. Which is fortunate as the entertainment giant announced a subscription price hike in the US, effective 21 October.
