Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), in collaboration with EV Plus Mobility, has unveiled the nation’s first-ever lamp post electric vehicle (EV) charger with full ESG compliance. It is installed at UMPSA’s Automotive Engineering Centre in Pekan, where three lamp post EV charging units are currently in operation.
During the unveiling, both parties also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to strengthen collaboration in research and development aimed at advancing sustainable electric vehicle (EV) technology. According to EV Plus Mobility, the initiative draws inspiration from Europe’s smart city solutions, where EV chargers are seamlessly integrated into existing street infrastructure. In this case, the lamp post EV charger serves a dual purpose; functioning as both a streetlight and an EV charging station.
The lamp post EV charger were developed in-house by UMPSA through a research project titled “Electric Vehicle Charging Accessibility Through Urban Retrofitting Solutions”. This research allows UMPSA to focus on the development of scalable models and smart payment systems, while EV Plus contributes technical expertise and the preparation of components for performance testing.
Each charger delivers a standard output of up to 7 kW, with the flexibility to be configured for up to 22 kW depending on site requirements. Users can access the chargers via the EVlution mobile app, which allows reservations up to 15 minutes before arrival. Charging is priced at a flat rate of RM5, regardless of energy consumed. Currently, there are no time limits or fees applied at the UMPSA charging site.

During the unveiling, EV Plus Mobility announced its plan to collaborate with 100 universities nationwide to empower the younger generation through research, knowledge sharing, and innovation in sustainable mobility. In addition, the company aims to work with state governments to transform existing street lamp posts into EV charging units, with a national target of installing 1,000 chargers across Malaysia.
