While German manufacturers BMW and Mercedes-Benz were unveiling their cars at the IAA Mobility, Porsche revealed a new technology that could change the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The new innovation is charging plate that enables wireless charging for EVs.
It works just like wireless charging for your phone. Instead of plugging in, you simply park your car over the 11 kW charging plate, and it begins charging automatically. This eliminates the need for a separate wall box or control unit. This innovation stems from the company’s analysis, which found that around 75 per cent of all charging for all-electric Porsche models takes place at home.

The charging plates will be available for purchase at Porsche Centres and through Porsche’s online shop starting in 2026 in Europe. The automaker has also confirmed that the upcoming all-electric Cayenne will be the first model line offered with the necessary vehicle-side equipment.
It will feature hardware to support wireless charging, which, according to the company, is located in the underbody of the vehicle between the front wheels. It is placed there to protect it from stone chips and weather. As for the base plate, the live components are protected from harsh weather.

It can be installed in a garage, carport, or even an open parking space, and is simply connected to the mains for effortless charging. Additionally, customers will be supported by Porsche Installation Service to install the device at their homes.
Besides that, the base plate also has a motion detector and foreign object detection. The charging process is automatically interrupted if a living creature gets between the vehicle and the floor plate or if a metallic object lies on the latter and heats up.

Porsche Wireless Charging is also integrated into the My Porsche app, allowing drivers to track charging sessions and authenticate multiple vehicles with ease. To ensure precise alignment, a dedicated view within the Surround View parking function helps guide the Cayenne to the optimal charging position. Once the vehicle is correctly parked over the floor plate and the parking brake is engaged, charging begins automatically.
