Throughout the past couple of months, we’ve seen possible names for the sequels of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Yes, sequels, with the next one alleged to be called the 8 Elite 2 followed by the 8 Elite 3. These two names come from serial leakster Digital Chat Station, though said leakster has changed the record.
In the latest post on Chinese social media Weibo, the leakster now says that the SM8850 now has a new tentative name – Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5. For context, the current Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite is SM8750, with the one two generations ahead designated SM8950.

Helping make sense of the name is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which was designated SM8650. Considering the model numbers, the Elite would have fit into the series as a Gen 4. Though it’s still strange that the generational number just continues in the sequence with Gen 5, just with the Elite name tacked on.
With that in mind, the name for the SM8950 has just got thrown out the window. Not that it matters right now since it’s still a whole generation away. But whether or not the name of the SM8850 will indeed be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5, we’ll have to wait until the Qualcomm Summit ext month.
