Rakuten has officially rolled out Instapaper support to Kobo e-readers, giving users a direct replacement for Pocket, which Mozilla will be discontinuing in October 2025. The move comes after months of uncertainty for Kobo owners, many of whom had relied heavily on Pocket integration as a way to save and read articles offline.
Kobo confirmed in July that Instapaper would be its replacement of choice, and the integration is now live via a free firmware update for all currently supported devices. The update is available worldwide and covers the full range of supported Kobo e-readers, meaning even older models in circulation can take advantage.

While Pocket and Instapaper aren’t identical, their functionality overlaps enough that the transition is expected to be smooth for most readers. After linking an Instapaper account, Kobo users can access their saved articles directly from the device, download them for offline reading, and manage their library with options to like, delete or archive content.
Importantly, Instapaper integration does not require a paid subscription. Kobo owners can use the free tier of the service without restriction, making it an easy drop-in replacement ahead of Pocket’s shutdown.
