Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, X, and founder of xAI, recently accused Apple of committing an “unequivocal antitrust violations” by favouring OpenAI over xAI, in App Store rankings. In a post on his social media platform, X, Musk said that he would take immediate legal action, but didn’t clarify how he plans to do so.
Musk claims that the fruit company refuses to put either X or Grok its “Must Have” Section of the App Store, while claiming that his social media app is “the #1 news app in the world”, while Grok ranks within the top five of all apps. While the first claim may hold some merit, the second seems a bit of a stretch, given the obvious popularity of OpenAI’s own ChatGPT.
Apple has, of course, denied Musk’s claims of bias and unjust treatment toward X and xAI. In a statement to Bloomberg, the company from Cupertino said that its App Store is “designed to be fair and free of bias.” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, chimed in on Musk’s accusation, saying that it is remarkable, given how the man, who once ran DOGE for the Trump administration, is manipulating X for his own benefit.
What Musk fails to mention is that Apple has an ongoing partnership with OpenAI, and is integrating ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence to power cloud-based queries. Again, his claims of bias are unsubstantiated and at the time of writing, he has not provided any evidence to support his threat of legal action.
