Microsoft has announced that it will officially end support for Windows 11 SE, its lightweight operating system designed to rival Google’s ChromeOS, by October 2026. The company will cease providing software updates, technical assistance, and security patches from that date onwards.
Launched in 2021, the platform was introduced as a streamlined version of Windows tailored for educational use. It was optimised for low-spec devices and debuted alongside the Surface Laptop SE, aimed at students and schools seeking a more affordable and simplified Windows experience.

Despite being Microsoft’s most refined attempt at a trimmed-down OS, the SE version of Windows failed to gain meaningful traction. Meanwhile, device offerings remained limited and the platform never attracted the same level of attention as other Windows variants.

Microsoft added that existing Windows 11 SE devices will continue to function after the October 2026 cut-off date. However, it is advising users to begin transitioning to devices that support standard editions of Windows 11 in order to maintain access to ongoing support and security updates.
