Malaysia is aiming to become an “inclusive and sustainable” AI nation by 2030. At today’s tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim outlined the aspiration to transform the country into a regional hub for digital technology as well as products and services under the “Made by Malaysia” branding.
To achieve this, the government seeks to integrate AI across key sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, education, finance, security, housing, and public services. Some applications include automation and predictive analytics to optimise production of goods. The adoption of artificial intelligence in these fields is intended to increase productivity, efficiency, and innovation, thus enhancing Malaysia’s global competitiveness.

Additionally, AI will play a significant role in the modernisation of public administration, namely in improving the GovTech ecosystem. The government will rely on big data analytics as well as AI for better decision-making. Aside from that, the technology will be used to enhance transparency and identify issues like abuse of power and non-compliance.
According to the Prime Minister, the government plans to cultivate AI literacy from an early stage. Additionally, the National AI Action Plan 2030 will drive the development of local talent and digital infrastructure. These efforts should support the shift towards AI. Anwar also stated that a national digital trust and data security strategy will be implemented to protect personal data, as well as prevent cyber threats and safeguard the nation’s digital sovereignty.
