Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof has announced that Peninsular Malaysia’s electricity tariffs will see a rebate of 1.45 sen/kWh next month. This is due to a drop in fuel costs, including gas and coal. For the current month of July, there was not fuel surcharge or rebate.
Fadillah, who is also minister of energy transition and water transformation, said that “due to the drop in fuel and gas prices, from 1 to 31 August, a rebate will be given for electricity at 1.45 sen/kWh”. Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) also projects bigger rebates all the way up to November. More specifically the rebates are projected to be 1.23 sen/kWh, 2.65 sen/kWh and 1.95 sen/kWh for September, October and November respectively.
Of course, all of this only affects non-domestic users and domestic users who use more than 600 kWh. The Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) doesn’t apply to households using 600 kWh or less in a month. For all of those that apply, the AFA is imposed at a flat rate. Worth mentioning is the Energy Efficiency Incentive rebate for usage under 1,000 kWh a month.
Fadillah added “we want to ensure that the majority of consumers, particularly those who use electricity efficiently, are not burdened by fluctuations in global fuel prices”. Separately, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously claimed that 85% of households will be seeing lower bills following the AFA implementation.
