Taxi drivers and the whole taxi industry play a huge role in the tourism sector of the country. This is because the taxi drivers are usually the first Malaysians that a tourist speaks to. In that case, that conversation reflects a lot about the Malaysian people and society.
Keeping this in mind, basic language and etiquette training for taxi drivers are being planned ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke. “The taxi industry isn’t just transportation — it’s the pulse of public service and the country’s first face to tourists,” he said. Loke shared the announcement on his Facebook page.
He announced this after officiating the third annual general meeting of the Malaysia Taxi, Rental Car, Limousine and Airport Taxi Association (GTSM). This event, according to Loke, allowed him to understand the industry in more depth. “As the Minister of Transport, I believe only through close collaboration with industry players like GTSM that we can bring about truly meaningful reforms,” he added.
On the other hand, the PERKESO contribution incentive will also be increased from 10% to 30%. Loke said this is being done to ensure that the safety and welfare of the taxi drivers are taken care of and given top priority. “These reforms are underway, and I will continue with industrialists to strengthen the public transport sector for the benefit of the people,” Loke added.
