The Google Pixel Watch 4 is expected to make its debut alongside the company’s Pixel 10 lineup. As with the smartphones, the wearable has been the subject of leaks and rumours. Back in April, renders posted by OnLeaks revealed something peculiar about the design: the back of the watch did not feature charging contacts. Now, a new leak might have the reason for that.
Android Headlines shared a set of renders depicting a new side-mounted charger for the Pixel Watch 4. Based on the images, it seems that Google has moved the charging contacts to the left side of the watch, opposite the crown. The charger itself has a pill-shape, and the watch is meant to slot into it sideways.
This new design means the watch can be used as a bed-side clock while it charges. It has also been speculated that the revamped system is the reason for the 25% faster charging speed on the Pixel Watch 4. Aside from that, shifting the charging contacts to the side allows the back of the watch to be easily removed, making the device more repairable compared to its predecessors.
However, this change would present some new issues. As this system uses a completely new charger, the Pixel Watch 4 will not be compatible with chargers for the previous generation. The new charging dock will apparently be included in the box, but not a USB-C adapter.

It goes without saying that the veracity of this information is uncertain as it did not directly originate from Google. Fortunately, it likely won’t be long until we hear about the smartwatch from an official source, as this year’s Made by Google event is set to take place on 20 August.
