Last month, the Energy Commission announced the restructuring of electricity tariffs starting in July. The assumption is that this will lead to people seeing higher electricity bills. But Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that this is not the case for the majority of Malaysian households. Instead, he claims that up to 85% of households would see lower electricity bills instead.
He goes on to say that some domestic users will see electricity bill reductions of up to 14% starting this month. “The tariff has increased, but costs have reduced, which means bills will be lower”, the PM said. He goes on to urge the public to not assume there will be an increase, and to check their respective electricity bills at the end of the month.

In case you missed it, the Energy Commission announced that electricity tariffs will be adjusted monthly rather than biannually. This will be based on fuel prices as well as foreign exchange rates. The older tiered billing system is also being recategorised by voltage level – low, medium and high. Most domestic users will fall under the former.
Perhaps most pertinently, domestic users who use 1,000 kWh or less per month will get a rebate under the Energy Efficiency Incentive (EEI). There is also the expanded Time-of-Use (ToU) scheme which rewards using more power during off-peak hours, which have also been extended.
